General information

City of Krasnodar (before 1920 — Ekaterinodar) is a capital of Krasnodar Territory. It is situated on the right bank of Kuban river at the range of 120-150 km from the Black and Azov seas.

In 1783 the manifesto of the Catherine II had proclaimed the final annexation of Crimea, Taman and the right-bank Kuban lands to Russia. And in 1793 Ekaterinodar was established as a military frontier fortification. From 1867 Ekaterinodar had received a status of a civilian city, which promoted rapid development of industry and population growth.

The lay-out of the streets in the central part of a temporary city has been left the way it was from the beginning of XIX century. One can observe here the monuments, dedicated to the history of the Cossacks, luxurious public buildings and hotels, elegant houses of prosperous citizen. The styles of classicism and later baroque, eclecticism and modern can be seen in historical centre development.

Modern Krasnodar is not only industrial, but also generally recognized as a cultural centre in the South of Russia. The achievements of Krasnodar art experts are known far outside Krasnodar Territory. There are 5 theatres in the city: academic theatre of drama, puppet-show theatre, music theatre, Youth theatre and the New puppet-show theatre. "Premiera" creative association and Krasnodar Territory Philharmonic Society are famous not only in Russia, but also abroad. Regular music festivals and large regional exhibitions of fine arts are taking place in the city.

For more than bicentennial history of Ekaterinodar-Krasnodar many distinguished workers of arts have bound their names with the capital of the Cossack land.

There are 2 airports, including one international, and a river cargo port at the territory of the city; it is intersected with 4 directions of railroads and 2 federal highways.
